Some months before, just after the Battle ofRoanoke, Comrade Thomas Earle, somewhat to thesurprise of the other members, left the Companya on a furlough, and went back to Massachusetts ; and*w/»/w»great was j^g astonishment when, after the Battleof New Berne, he returned a lieutenant in the samecompany he had left thirty days before as a privatesoldier.
