Cell of a new landfill site being prepared before filling with household waste
Landfill sites are a controversial issue with the possibility of less land being available for landfill . New environmental initiatives for the increase in recycling of household materials are now being put into effect to decrease the type and amount of waste being put into landfill sites. Alternative methods of waste disposal such as safe incineration are also an option now. However, with careful management and an understanding of the land conditions the holes or pits on landfill sites can be successfully filled with the right type of waste thus removing the scars on the landscape. In this way it is possible to to return the land to its previous condition before extraction or to adapt the area for a variety of leisure uses. Methane gas produced from landfill is recovered and harnessed to produce electricity often enough to power a small town. This is an excellent example of how to provide electrical power without using renewable resources such as oil and coal
