Flowering espalier apple trees in the orchard of Rousham House, with a gardener hoeing in the background, Oxfordshire, England

One of Rousham House's gardeners' hoeing amongst the fruit trees within the orchard, with a gnarled apple tree full of delicate pink blossom in the foreground and a glimpse of the house beyond. The orchard contains a mixture of old trees with gnarled trunks and branches, together with new specimens grown from cuttings of the more established trees, of which there are several varieties of both apple and pear. Rousham House Gardens, Oxfordshire. The grounds of Rousham were largely designed by William Kent (1685-1748) and are a remarkable example of English landscape design, remaining much as Kent left them in the mid-18th Century. The Walled Garden at Rousham actually pre-dates the work done by Kent.
