Village sign at Rackheath on the north-eastern edge of Norwich, Norfolk.

Rackheath, a village of about 1500 people on the north eastern edge of Norwich, is one of a dozen locations across the UK to be selected as potential site for an 'eco-development', or a carbon neutral new settlement, and the only one to score an 'A' rating for its suitability. There is strong local opposition to the prospect of 3,400 new houses. The town sign includes, at the bottom, the coats of arms of the Stracey family on whose land much of the village was built, and that of the Pettus family who built and lived in the original Rackheath Hall. The sign also depicts All Saints church, declared redundant in 1971 but subsequently restored and now in the care of the Norfolk Churches Trust, and the Amercan air base which operated for a year towards the end of the Second World War.
