Duke Ellington sings as he plays at the Antibes Jazz Festival in1966


Duke Ellington, musician extraordinaire of the 20th century. He recorded more music and wrote nearly 2000 pieces of music in a variety of forms, more than any other composer. Born Apr 29 1899, he learned the piano as a boy but preferred baseball. As a teenager he learned from Harvey Brooks and by the time he was 18 formed his first group The Duke's Srenaders. By 1923 he was broadcasting. He made his first tour of Europe in 1933 and toured the world in 1963. Among his music are church, Blues, jazz and tunes 'Mood Indigo'', 'Satin Doll', & 'Take the A Train'. He died on May 24 1974
