Pigeon netting now protects French-influenced statues of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child, and two angels at the cathedral at Bolzano, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. The statues, standing under sculptured capitals, flank a High Gothic portal at the entrance to the mainly 1300s and 1400s Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady).

Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, Bolzano, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: statues and sculptured capitals at entrance. The cathedral, known to German-speaking Roman Catholics as Dompfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt, stands on the site of an early Christian basilica. It was enlarged in Romanesque style and re-dedicated in 1180 before gaining a Gothic appearance between 1380 and 1420. The ornate 65m-high open fretwork spire, added in 1517, features gargoyles judged masterpieces of High or Flamboyant Gothic sculpture and architecture.
