Germany is famous for its sausage, and Nuremberg produces its own smaller sausages called the Nuremberger bratwurst. There are many food stalls at the Nuremberg Christmas market, selling these sausages. There are several stories of the finger-size sausage origins. In medieval times, due to its small size, the sausage was passed through a prison door to feed the inmates in their cells at the city’s medieval dungeon, the Mittelalterliche Lochgefangnisse (medieval hole prison). The museum is open to the public. The Nuremberg Christmas Market dates back to the mid-16th century. It is one of Germany's oldest Christmas fairs and attracts visitors from around the world.
