The Wolf that Never Sleeps', 1899-1900. Robert Baden-Powell (1857-1941) at Mafeking, ever watchful, living up to his Matebele name 'Mpeesi' ('The Wolf That Never Sleeps'). In the 2nd Boer War (1899-1902), Baden-Powell won fame as the defender of Mafeking which was under siege by the Boers from 14 October 1899 until it was relieved by Field Marshal Roberts on 19 May 1900. After the war he founded the Boy Scouts (1909) and Girl Guides (1910).
