The Abbé Francois Napoleon Marie Moigno (1804-1884), is considered one of the most learned men of France and of the Catholic Church in the 19th century. He was a Jesuit with a particular interest in science, and in 1836 the Order appointed him professor of mathematics at the college of Sainte-Geneviéve in Paris. He wrote numerous articles for the press. After he had published a two-volume work on calculus, the Jesuit Order sought to restrict his scientific activities. In 1843 he left the Jesuit Order. In 1850 he became scientific editor of the journal “Presseâ€Â\x9D followed by “Paysâ€Â\x9D in 1851. He founded the scientific journal “Cosmosâ€Â\x9D in 1852. A prolific writer, he published several scientific works on many topics, including the electric telegraph, modern optics, analytical mechanics, explosive agents etc.
