Gage, Governor of California: Herewith we hand you the report of Hon. J. L. Gillis, State Librarian,for the past two years, the same being fiscal years fifty-two and fifty-three. It gives a good idea of the work done in the Library for theperiod covered. It has been the aim of the present management of the Library to makethe institution as valuable as possible to all its patrons. To accomplishthis result, a modern system of indexing was adopted, and it has beenproceeded with as rapidly as possible.
