So placed, the boards will prevent water from soaking directly through the leaves to the plants, and possibly heating and decaying them. No moist or fresh manure should come in direct contact with any perennials. Vines can be covered with burlap as suggested for climbing Roses. If not hardy, take them down and bury them, mulching afterward.
