This 1899 illustration shows the Roman politician Appius Claudius being led into the Senate before his speech in 280 He served as a consul (leader) twice and in 285 was appointed dictator. According to the Roman historian Livy, a curse took his eyesight and in 280 , he gave a speech to the Romans saying that Rome would never surrender. Pyrrhus of Epirus in Greece was attempting at the time to conquer Rome. And, Pyrrhus did not get Rome.
