Gallstones: false-colour oral cholecystogram, an x-ray image of the gall bladder (in orange), revealing two gallstones (dark circular areas) contained within. In cholecystography, the patient swallows a radio-opaque iodine compound that is absorbed in the intestine & excreted by the liver in bile which becomes concentrated in the gall bladder. Subsequent X-ray examination reveals an outline of the gall bladder & the presence of any stones. The iodine swallow is often accompanied by a fatty meal which is given to demonstrate the ability of the gall bladder to contract.
