Girl with genetic condition ectodermal dysplasia, wearing a wig. Six year-old girl who suffers from ectodermal dysplasia (ED), seen wearing a wig of donated human hair. The hair was donated by the mother of another ED sufferer. ED describes a group of developmental conditions affecting the ectoderm, the layer of cells that form the skin and nervous system. Typical symptoms include very fine hair, thin skin, missing or mis-shapen teeth and high susceptibility to eczema and asthma. There are several possible genetic causes to ED, in most of them both parents have to be carriers of the defective gene. It is estimated that there are currently around 7, 000 diagnosed cases of ED worldwide. Although it may affect any populaion, it is most prevalent in caucasian people.
