Shipping containers used as shops, green grocer, barber and phone booth, Langa Township, Cape Town, South Africa

Enterprising residents, self-sufficiency in mind, use shipping containers as shops on the streets of Langa. Here we see a walk-in, old fashioned greengrocer's, trestle tables piled with potatoes, sacks of potatoes piled on the pavement, net bags of oranges hanging from the front. Next door, we have what appears to be a phone booth with an Armed Response sign on the door. A barber's shop occupies the street corner location. Langa, the oldest township in South Africa involving black people being forcibly removed to their own residential areas following the Group Areas Act of 1923, was well planned, with a police station at the entry, wide roads and tall security floodlights, the base of one in the centre of this view.
