Copernican cosmology. 17th-century diagram showing the six known planets (astrological symbols) orbiting the Sun in what is known as a heliocentric system. Surrounding the planets is an outer circle of stars. The Moon is shown orbiting the Earth. The other planets are: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. This diagram is from 'Sphaera mundi' (1635) by Italian Jesuit astronomer and mathematician Giuseppe Biancani (1566-1624).
