Ant-mimic praying mantis nymph. Praying mantises are carnivorous insects, but they also are also preyed upon larger animals. The young instars of some mantids such as this one mimic ants to derive protection from predators. Larger instars and adults of the species, neither of which are ant mimics, actually eat ants. Ant-mimicry is known as myrmecomorphy.
