Death of Duke of Orleans

Louis I de Valois, Duke of Orleans, was assassinated on November 23, 1407, by order of John, the fearless Duke of Burgundy. He was brutally attacked (pictured here) as he mounted his horse. The duke's older brother was king of France, Charles VI. Charles the Mad and the duke quarreled often with the Duke of Burgundy, who was the acting regent. This 15th-century miniature illustration is from the Chronicles of Monstrelet.
