This is galaxy NGC 5584, a barred spiral galaxy, which lies 75 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. The bright spot towards the bottom right of the galaxy's centre is supernova SN 2007af, whose explosion was seen on 1st March 2007. Image taken by the ESO's (European Southern Observatory) Very Large Telescope in March 2007.
