FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Board of Education The General Assembly authorizes Presbyteries torecommend grants to students from the Board of Educa-tion according to the following rates: One hundred andfifty dollars to students of the first year, on condition thatthey do not take appointments to preach during the timethe Seminary is in session; one hundred dollars to secondyear students on condition that they do not preach on anaverage of more than two Sabbaths per month; and fiftydollars to third year students without condition. The Young Mens Fund From this Seminary fund a student may, upon sat-isfactory recommendation, receive loans each session,payable within fiwe years without interest. The sums thus acquired are supplemental to theliberal allowance provided for student mission wrork,. 50 THE PITTSBURGH THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY and to the scholarship funds of the Seminary (see Sem-inary Mission and Scholarships). In addition, licensedstudents have numerous opportunities to preach in va-cant congregations, and they obtain remuneration fortheir services. Considering the funds that are available and thepossibilities of self-support, the Seminary offers its stu-dents financial assistance surpassed by few institutionsin the country. SCHOLARSHIPSThe James Purdy Scholarship Foundation There exists in the possession of the Seminary thePurdy Fund, bearing the name of its founder. The in-come, which is about $300, is apportioned equally eachyear to the six members of the Junior Class who attainthe highest average of excellence in scholarly appropriation is subject to the condition that thoseaccepting it must agree to complete their theologicalcourse in this Seminary, and that no award be made toa student wh
