The death of Mortimer. Act II Scene 5 in Henry VI Part I by William Shakespeare.

From an original engraving after James Northcote (1746-1831) From the Hume & Stafford history of England published circa 1868. The Death of Mortimer Act II Scene 5 in Henry VI Part I by William Shakespeare. Mortimer explaining to Richard with his dying breath that he is the rightful heir to the throne of England. A distortion of history by Shakespeare as Mortimer was not imprisoned by Henry V to whom he was entirely loyal (indeed Henry had given him his liberty), died in Ireland & Richard Plantagenet was only 13 at the time of his death. Probably intended to reinforce Richard's claim to audiences.
