A late 19th century view of the Great Hall in Edinburgh Castle, completed in 1511 for King James IV. The giant roof beams rest on stones carved with heads and symbols. Originally for grand banquets and state events, when Oliver Cromwell’s army captured the castle in 1650 and began a military makeover of the space, the Great Hall was turned into a barracks and later, a military hospital. The army finally moved out in 1886.
