Vegetables and wild honey for sale, Doi Mae Salong or Santikhiri Chinese Village, Near Chiang Rai, Thailand.

At the conclusion of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, some remnants of the anti-communist Kuomintang (KMT) forces refused to surrender, including 278th Regiment of the 93rd Division and 709th Regiment of the 237th Division They marched from Yunnan in South-West China to Myanmar, but were not allowed to settle there. Some went to Taiwan. Some went across the border to Doi Mae Salong, Thailand, which has come to be known as the Chinese Village. The village came to be known for opium groiwing. Pressure has been applied by Thailand for crop diversification to, amongst others, tea. Generally there has been a “Thaiing” of the area, an attempt at re-claiming the village, which appears to have been essentially successful, except the official Thai name for the village Santikhiri isn’t widely used.
