In order to keep the amalgam from sticking inthe tube mill or caking under the muller of the settler, it must be kept exceedingly-thin, and this is accomplished by adding mercury Aveig-hing tifteen times the weightof the silver in the ore. After draining in the sacks the amalgam still carries 78per cent, mercury. The tube mill acts as a large amalgamating barrel extracting by amalgamation97 per cent, to 98 per cent, of the total silver in the ore, the cyanide in the chargekeeping the mercury clean.
