The first specimen is worthy of mention. It was taken by Peter Long at Humboldt, Allen County, and reported by Goss (1891). Goss stated, "A young male, on the 19th of September, 1876, flew into a billiard saloon in Humboldt, Kansas, at midnight, no doubt attracted there by the light of the burning lamps that brightly reflected out into the darkness.

Sight records are from 21 September to 28 October in the fall, and 13 March to 26 May in the spring. Habits and Habitat: Like the Black-legged Kittiwake, the Sabine's Gull is primarily a marine gull. After breeding on land, it becomes pelagic. It is one of the most beautiful of the North American gulls when in breeding plumage, and unlike that of most gulls, its immature plum- age is also attractive. It is probably the smallest of the gulls that visit Kansas. Field Marks: In any plumage, the black triangular pattern in the wing tips and bright white secondaries are distinctive. On the immature, the V-shaped tail has a black tip. Food: This gull feeds mainly on insects and other invertebrates plucked from the water.
