A beekeeper sprinkling icing sugar onto bees as a varroa mite treatment.


Varroa mites are a growing pest in British beehives. There are chemical treatments but one well regarded approach is to sprinkle icing sugar over the bees. This encourages the bees to groom themselves and in doing so, dislodge any mites which are attached to them. The bees then use the icing sugar to make honey and nothing is wasted. Note that in this case the icing sugar was ground from pure cane sugar to avoid contaminants in commercial icing sugar
