Castell Coety Coity Castle Bridgend South Wales West Entrance of the outer ward Sir Payn de Turberville one of Marcher Lord Robert FitzHamons knights was the first Norman to hold Coity Castle He acquired the castle and its land from the local Welsh Leader Morgan Gam Gams stronghold was certainly replaced by a Norman fortification by the late 11th Century This early Norman fortification was a ringwork and the castle today although much improved from the early one still retains much of this earlier design A hundred years after coming under Norman control the wooden palisades and buildings were replaced by stone construction Sir Gilbert de Turberville the Lord at the time built the keep and the curtain wall enclosing the inner bailey and the northeast tower The Keep north walls
