The vessel must be of such capacity that the sub-stance placed on the diaphragm shall be under the surface of theliquid when properly filled. A modification of this is used in somelarge establishments for the preparation of tinctures; it has manyadvantages over ordinary apparatus for maceration, and is not unlikedisplacement in the beauty and efficiency of the preparations made ,in it. In preparing large quantities of tinctures or infusions by maceration,there is considerable loss of the saturated liquid, unless a suitable pressis used to obtain the last portions. The pattern figured on the nextpage, which is sold by Bullock & Crenshaw, of Philadelphia, price$10, is among the best in the market.
