Paget's disease. Coloured X-ray showing a skull in Paget's disease or osteitis deformans. The skull has a mottled appearance due to its increased porosity, and part of it has become thickened (blue). Paget's disease is a chronic bone disease which occurs in middle-aged and elderly people. The normal organisation and balance of bone absorption and creation becomes disrupted leading to weak deformed bones. Alterations in the shape of the skull can lead to damage to the inner ear, causing headaches, vertigo and deafness. Treatment, while not usually needed, is with painkillers, the hormone calcitonin to promote healthy bone formation or surgery.
