With a population of 22,193, St. John's is the commercial centre of the nation and the chief port of the island of Antigua. The settlement of St. John's has been the administrative centre of Antigua and Barbuda since the islands were first colonised in 1632, and it became the seat of government when the nation achieved independence in 1981. Saint John is also the capital of Antigua. The best shopping in Antigua can be found in St. John's, among the shops on St. Mary's Street or High Street. A former warehouse provides space for three dozen or more shops, surrounded by impeccably landscaped courtyards. The shops in this plaza sell a wide variety of goods, from linens and jewellery to pottery and handicrafts. Cruise ship shoppers tend to end up at Heritage Quay, due to its close proximity to the piers. There are over 40 duty-free shops here, numerous restaurants, and space for local artists to display their work. The shops here are in operation for extended hours compared to the norm in Antigua, remaining open from 9 until 5:30 , Monday through Saturday. Saturday mornings present a real treat in St. John's, as a farmer's market opens up at the end of Market Street. Fresh fruits and vegetables fill the vendor booths, allowing visitors the opportunity to purchase the freshest produce. Antiguan black pineapple is a particular favorite.
