JOHN STEHLIN. John Stehlin, who is engaged in a very successful shoe business atHancock, Houghton County, Michigan, which he has built up by his ownenterprise, is one of the city aldermen. He is of German extraction, his par-ents having been born in Alsace-Lorraine. They came to America prior tohis birth, and his father died at Hancock, at the age of 79 years. His mother,aged 82 years, is a beloved member of his household. Mr. Stehlin was connected with mines and mining for a considerableperiod, for five years being a copper washer in the Ouincy mill. In 1893 neleft there and engaged in smelting work as a copper dipper, for five 1898 he bought a half interest in the Calumet Brewery, and became treas-urer of the company, but in 1900 he sold his interest and invested in a prop-erty in Hancock. This he remodeled, erecting a three-story building, andhere for the past four years he has engaged in a large shoe business. JAMES LISA. HOUGHTON, BARAGA AND MARQUETTE COUNTIES 369 Stehlin is a good citizen, and in 1903, when Hancock was incorporated a city,lie was elected alderman from the Second Ward. Mr. Stehlin married Bridget Buckley in 1890, and they have three brightand interesting children: Edward, born June 2, 1891; Cornelius, born April17, 1893; and Elva, born July 30, 1896. In religious faith Mr. Stehlin andfamily are Catholics. Fraternally he belongs to the Woodmen and to theKnights of Columbus. JAMES LISA. James Lisa, a general merchant of Calumet, Houghton County, Michi-gan, and one of the citys prominent business men, was born in 1845 at SanMartino Canavese, Italy. As his father was in very moderate circumstances,the youth was obliged to leave school at the age of 12 years in order to assistand add to the family resources, but he continued to study, and
