This portrait frames the constellation of Orion, plus parts of Monoceros to the left and Gemini and Taurus above, composed to include most of the emission and reflection nebulas in this rich region along the Milky Way. The arc of Barnard's Loop, aka Sharpless 2-276, is the main feature, encircling the nebula-rich Belt and Sword of Orion, the latter containing the bright Orion Nebula, Messier 42 and 43. Below the Belt is the region of the Horsehead Nebula. At lower right beside the blue star Rigel is the Witch Head Nebula, IC 2118, with fainter blue reflection nebulosity above it. At the centre along the left edge is the Rosette Nebula and above it the complex of faint nebulosity around the Christmas Tree Cluster, all in Monoceros. At top is the bright star cluster Messier 35 in Gemini and the nearby nebulas IC 443 (an arc of a supernova remnant) and the round NGC 2174. Below that is Lower's Nebula, Sharpless 2-261. The head of Orion is immersed in the large Angel Fish Nebula, Cederblad 54, aka the Lambda Orionis Nebula. Above right of the Angel FIsh is a pair of star clusters NGC 1807 and 1817 in Taurus, not well known but they show up well here. In the top right corner is a part of the Taurus Dark Clouds. This is a stack of 15 x 2-minute exposures with the Canon RF28-70mm lens at 46mm and on the red-sensitive Canon Ra at ISO 800. The lens had a mild broadband filter on it, the 95mm URTH Night. Other than that, no other filters were employed. But this was shot from Australia in March 2024, with Orion high in the southwest. Some light haze on some frames added the natural star glows.
