The 1918 caption reads: “Athena comes between Odysseus, Laertes and Telemachus and Eupeithes and his band who want to banish Odysseus.” This image shows the return of Odysseus. According to the Greek legend as told by Homer in the "Odyssey," when the hero Odysseus returned home to Ithaca from the Trojan War, a journey that had taken him 20 years, he found his palace overrun with suitors vying for the hand of his wife. Here, the goddess Athena intervenes between Odysseus, Laertes, and Telemachus and the lead suitor Eupeithes whom with the other suitors, wants to banish Odysseus.
