It isabout one-sixth as long as the Mont Cenistunnel, and, considering the difference in themethods and implements in use, it was quiteas bold an undertaking. It opens on theItalian side, at the very source of the Po,about 2,000 yards above the level of the sea,and more than 2,150 yards of its length is cutin a straight line thronsh the solid rock inthe very heart of the Alpine chain. It wasintended to be used aa a turnpike road, andis to this day the only direct route fromEmbrun to Saluces. Partly destroyed by theKing of Sardinia, so as to impede the invasionof the French Republican armies, it wasafterward repaired and improved by NapoleonI. Strange that such a work should havebeen almost forgotten, and should now be ofno practical use.—N. Y. Post.
