The maternal grandpar-ents were also long-lived and died in Canada,whither they had emigrated from Scotland. Thesubject of this sketch received the usual educa-tion till the age of twelve, but when he wentEast in 1862 he became a clerk in a grocerystore for four years. On his return to Califor-nia in 1866 he went to work in the pork-packingbusiness in San Francisco for some years, andthen to butchering on his own account for ayear or two, and afterward into the Iruit andproduce business for wages for five or six 11, 1879, he came to Walnut Groveand helped his mother in the hotel business fortwo years, and then bought and sold fruit for.
