Deinotherium skull, illustration. This skull is 1 metre long. This extinct prehistoric mammal (a herbivorous proboscid) is related to elephants and was found in Eurasia and Africa. It appeared in the Middle Miocene (around 16-12 million years ago) and continued until the Early Pleistocene (around million years ago). It is thought to have been larger than modern elephants.
