Many religious buildings have been modelled on the Hagia Sophia's core structure of a large central dome resting on pendentives and buttressed by two semi-domes. Many Byzantine churches were modeled on the Hagia Sophia including the namesake Hagia Sophia in Thessaloniki, Greece. Under Justinian, the Hagia Irene was remodelled to have a dome similar to the Hagia Sophia. St Mark's Basilica in Venice's most likely influence on its architecture and design is the Hagia Sophia.
