Constellations are arbitrary groupings of stars. Most of the time, the stars in a constellation are very distant from one another, and the apparent shape that they trace in the sky is an effect of perspective. This is the case for the eight stars that make up the Big Dipper: the two farthest stars, Alkaid and Dubhe, are dozens of light-years (LY) from the other stars in the constellation.
