Hacelia starfish (Hacelia attenuata) and algal growth on the sea bed. The slimy layer of diatom algae covering most of the sea floor is an example of excessive algal growth, a common feature during eutrophication episodes. This is caused by an excess of dissolved nutrients, such as fertilisers washed into the sea from rivers. Photographed in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Spain.
