In the Churchyard of Steventon Church, Hampshire a flat stone covers the grave of James Austen and his second wife Mary – who died 24 years after the Rev. James. The stone bears the inscription:- The Rev. JAMES AUSTEN Born Feb. 13th 1763. Died Dec. 13th 1819. MARY AUSTEN Born April 17th 1771. Died August 3rd 1843. James was a brother of author Jane Austen, and was rector in the church.
