Only the great nobles and churchmen really voted in theelection; the others were there to give authority and impor-tance to their chiefs. These selected as king a Prankishnoble, Conrad, who was descended from Conrad I. So thegenerosity which the earlier Conrad had displayed in sacrificingthe interests of his house to the Saxons, was now to some extent repaid bythe restoration of his line. Indeed, it was mainly his lineage which led tothis second Conrads selection, for he was not one of the great dukes.
