Water milfoil shoot tip. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the shoot-tip of the aquatic whorled water milfoil (Myriophyllum verticillatum) plant. All aquatic plants (hydrophytes) have a similar stem and leaf structure. The whorls of leaves (outer semi-circles) have a thin cuticle and are permeable to water. The vascular tissue in the centre of the leaf (dark-blue oval) acts as a cable to resist the movement of water. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
