Treatment of a brain (intracranial) tumour using Stereotaxic Multi-Arc Radiotherapy (SMART), showing the radiation source at lower right. SMART is one of a number of improved techniques in radiotherapy that has achieved a reduction in the undesirable side affects of cranial irradiation. Radiotherapy is often given after surgery to remove a tumour (either partially or wholly), although the various types of intracranial tumours display differing degrees of radiosensitivity (benign tumours, for example, are generally insensitive to radiation).
