Colonists who came to Salem under the leadership of JohnWinthrop, from Suffolk, Essex, and Lincolnshire in settlement of the town was under the immediate auspices ofGovernor Matthew Cradock, who proposed to establish Ox theBanks of the Mystic, the headquarters of the fishing interests inwhich he had embarked considerable capital. The business was carriedon by his agents, for Cradock never visited the Colonies. The brickbuilding, built by his people in 1634, in the eastern part of the town, isstill standing in good condition, an interesting relic, and a monumentto him who may justly be called the founder of Medford. Cradock was a distinguished merchant of London, a princely giver inall subscriptions for helping the colony, a man of wisdom, goodness, zealand enthusiasm, and honored with the esteem and confidence of those inhigh authority.
