A sketch of the trial of Roger Casement (1864-1916), a diplomat and Irish nationalist who initially worked for the British Foreign Office as a diplomat, becoming known as a humanitarian activist. After retiring from consular service in 1913, he became involved with Irish republicanism and during World War I, made efforts to gain German military aid for the 1916 Easter Rising that sought to gain Irish independence. He was arrested, convicted and executed for high treason. Support for clemency was undermined by his alleged homosexual activities.
