The Bronze Age Liddle or Liddel Burnt Mound on South Ronaldsay, Orkney.
Liddle (or Liddel) Burnt mound lies at the southern end of South Ronaldsay close to the Isbister Chambered Cairn (the 'Tomb of the Eagles'). Prior to excavation it consisted of a c2m high mound of earth and burnt stones - the remains of this mound can be seen in the background of the photograph. Removal of the earth has revealed a Bronze Age oval structure measuring x 4m with an entrance at one end. It contained a large stone tank and a hearth. Archaeologists are divided on the exact use of the site although heating and cooking appear to have formed part of its function. Similar burnt mounds are found throughout the British Isles with more than 200 known on Orkney and a similar number in Shetland.
