BECLARD, Peter Augustus, one ofthe must eminent of modern anatomists,was Ijorn at Angers, in 1785. He is the author of Anatomical BED 77 Memoirs; and he published an edition ofBichats Treatise of General Anatomy,with BEDA, or BEDE, usually denominatedthe Venerable Bede, oiie of the mosteminent ecclesiastics and writers of hetime in which he lived, was borji, in 672or 673, in the vicinity of Wearmouth, inthe county of Durham. His fame was sogreat, that Pope Sergius invited him toRome, but he never quitted his nati\ecountry. His greatest work is his EnglishEcclesiastical History; but he wrote on avariety of subjects, and with high last labour was the translation of SaintJohns Gospel into Saxon. A few minutesafter he had dictated the concluding sen-tence of it he expired, in May, 735. BEDDOES, Thomas, a physician,born at Shifnal, in Shropshire, in ]7r0,was educated at Oxford and obtained the chemical professorship atOxford, but lost it by his political princi-ples.
