Total hip replacement. Coloured frontal X-ray of the pelvis of a 54-year-old man who has had his right hip replaced. The shaft of the ceramic prosthetic implant (lower left) is embedded into the femur (thigh bone) and articulates its ball component with an artificial hip socket (acetabulum) implanted into the adjacent bone (part of the pelvis). This operation is usually carried out to treat a condition such as osteoarthritis.
