Ed Ruscha painting Back of Hollywood installation in 1977 for Eyes and Ears project in Los Angeles, CA. The artwork was painted by Ruscha by hand onto to stitched canvas which was then draped over an existing billboard frame on Wilshire Blvd. across the street from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ruscha has said that after the project ran its course he cut up the canvas up to make a tent for his land in the Palm Desert.
