Wilhelm Johannsen (1857-1927), Danish geneticist, sitting at right on a bench with a colleague named Richards (left). US chemist Theodore W. Richards (1868-1928) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1914 for his work on atomic weights of the elements. Johannsen was professor of botany and plant physiology at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (later part of the University of Copenhagen). Johannsen, vice-chancellor of the university from 1917, worked on seed germination and breeding. He coined many of the terms used in genetics today, such as 'gene', 'phenotype' and 'genotype'.
